Privacy
There is no account, no sign-up and no form on this site. Nothing you type into a slider or a time field is sent anywhere by this site, and none of it is left in the page's address for another script to read. This page says what that leaves.
Who operates this site
DuskDial is operated by Inyonitech Solutions (Pty) Ltd, a company registered in South Africa. The company's Information Officer can be reached at hello@duskdial.com, which is the address for anything on this page.
Nothing you enter leaves your device
Every calculation on this site runs in your browser. The wake times, the sliders, the travel fields, the week's tally and the find-your-cycle notebook are all worked out on your own machine, and none of the values are sent to us or to anybody else. There is no account to create, no newsletter, no comments and no form that submits anywhere. The calendar files the site offers are made in your browser and saved straight to your device; nothing is sent anywhere to make them.
Settings in a link
Beside each calculator is a link, "Link to these settings", that carries the settings you have changed after the # sign, so that a bookmark made from it, or the link sent to somebody, opens the page the way you left it. It changes as the settings do, and clicking it copies it to your clipboard where the browser allows that; nothing is sent anywhere. The site uses the part after the # rather than a query string on purpose: a browser leaves that part out when it asks the server for a page, so the settings are not in any request for a page.
A page opened from such a link reads the settings and takes them out of its address at once, before any other script on the page runs, so no other script ever sees them there, and the address bar shows the page without them. Nothing about them is stored. A link you share carries whatever settings it holds to whoever you send it to.
What is stored on your device
A small number of things are kept in your browser's local storage so the site behaves sensibly between visits, and, only if you ask for it, a copy of the site's own pages is kept so that they open without a connection. They stay on your device, they are never transmitted, and they are readable only by this site in that browser.
| Key | What it holds | Why |
|---|---|---|
duskdial:theme | the word "dark" or the word "light" | so the page opens in the scheme you last chose instead of flashing the other one at you |
duskdial:clock | the number 12 or the number 24 | so times stay in the format you picked as you move from page to page |
duskdial:assumptions | two numbers: the cycle length and the drop-off allowance, both in minutes | so the two sliders stay where you put them rather than resetting on every page |
duskdial:week | up to seven numbers, each one a count of minutes slept, and the target you set | so the week's tally survives closing the tab, which is the only thing that makes a weekly tally usable |
duskdial:notebook | the mornings you note on the find-your-cycle page, at most sixty: for each, a date, when you got into bed, when you got up, and whether waking was fine or groggy | so the notebook is still there on the next morning, which is the only way it can gather enough mornings to fit a cycle length to |
/sw.js (a service worker) | nothing of its own; it is the script that answers from the copy below when there is no connection | only if you ask for the offline copy, so the site opens without a connection; removing the copy removes it too |
duskdial-… (Cache Storage) | copies of this site's own pages, scripts, styles, fonts, icons and the moon and sun images, exactly as the server sent them: 11 pages when you turn it on and up to 80 more you open | only if you ask for it, so those pages open without a connection; replaced by the current version the next time a page opens with a connection after the site changes, and nothing you type or set is in it |
None of it identifies you. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes all of it, the offline copy included. The week's tally, the notebook and the offline copy each also have a button of their own that removes them, and the site works with storage switched off entirely. The cookies and storage page says how to clear each one.
Hosting
The pages are static files served by Cloudflare. Like any web server, it processes the ordinary information a browser sends in order to deliver a page: the address requested, your IP address, your browser's user-agent string and the time. That is a necessary part of serving a page and is handled by Cloudflare under its own terms. We do not keep server logs of our own.
Analytics
Visitor numbers are measured with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is cookieless and stores no identifier on your device. It reports which page was viewed, the referring site, the browser and operating system in broad terms, the country, and how quickly the page loaded. What reaches us is counts. There is no profile, no cross-site tracking and no way for us to see an individual person. Google Analytics, Tag Manager and every other measurement tool are not used on this site.
Advertising
This site is to be funded by adverts served by Google AdSense, but no advertising script is loaded and no advert is shown. Before that changes, this page will say so and describe how the adverts and Google's consent message work.
If you write to us
Email sent to hello@duskdial.com reaches a mailbox we read. We use it only to answer you. Correspondence is kept for up to twelve months after it has been dealt with, then deleted. We do not add you to anything and there is nothing to unsubscribe from.
Your rights
Because there is no account and nothing you type or set leaves your device, there is in almost every case no personal information of yours for us to hold. Where there is — an email you chose to send — you may ask for a copy of it, ask for it to be corrected, ask for it to be deleted, or object to our keeping it. Write to the address above.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled something, you can complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa, to the Information Commissioner's Office in the United Kingdom, or to the supervisory authority in your own country in the European Union.
Children
This site is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect anything from anyone under 18, and since the site holds nothing that identifies anybody, there is nothing held about a child.
Changes
The date at the top of this page changes whenever the text does. There is no mailing list to notify, so the date is the notice.
